Lydia Gosling 9/11/13

Lydia Gosling - 9-11-13
Frank Frazetta - 1988 - title unknown - oil 1. What is the narrative being presented and is there a particular audience being considered? The narrative of this piece displays a woman who appears to be looking for someone, perhaps through a window by the suggested lighting. She seems to be waiting for maybe a lover or someone she is involved with to come home. Her face seems to be framed in anticipation and excitement, showing she is happy to see whomever is coming. The bright earth and jewel tones of the painting make the subject seem like she's in a happy mood, allowing the audience to feel the romance or happiness in the room. 2. Is this narrative engaging or innovative (or told in a new or innovative way)? Do YOU care to invest time in this storyline? What could be done to strengthen this narrative? I feel that this narrative is not very innovative as it seems to be purely a figure study, but the way the subject is positioned seems to make the viewer want to know more about the subject. I am really intrigued by the painterly marks as well as showing clarity in certain features. The narrative seems to be lacking a small amount of whats to come from the situation, but there is someone about it that really captivates me. 3. How strong are the formal elements in the composition/ figure? What works/ does not work and WHY? The painting as a whole is formally very attractive. The porportioning of the body is done fantastically along with the choice if palate. The positioning of the body and fabric are done fantastically. The viewer is left to really think about what she seems to be waiting for.
