Homework 2 - Amanda

TECHNIQUES
  • Broken Color: painting that consists of short individual strokes of color.
  • Palette Knife: painting done with different palette knives instead of brushes.
  • Under Painting: painting first done as a "rough draft" using simple colors or mediums. Quite often artists use acrylic to under paint, as it dries quickly, and will paint over that with oils.
SUPPORTS
  • Canvas: made of lined, cotton or polyester. The cloth is stretched over a wooden frame; because it is flexible it needs to be stiffened.
  • Paper: this is also flexible and is acid-free.
  • Wood: All different kinds may be used.
Depending on the support used, some may need to be sized and/or gessoed.

TOOLS
  • Palette knives: used to mix paint; is available in different shapes and sizes and may also be used in lieu of a brush.
  • Brushes: available in different shapes, sizes, and hairs; all move paint different and create various strokes.
  • palette: useful for mixing paints. Some  palettes are even great for paint storage.
