  1. this figure is simple but narrative in regards towards the eyes and the background. These allow you to know the emotional moment.

  2. I agree that the color along with body composition creates a very moody piece that to me is read instantly, and I think the colors work. The texture from the background could be brought into the figure more so there is more harmony.

  3. I think I would want to work on evenly sculpting the value of this figure, bringing the light tones up through the face especially.
I think the strongest part of the painting its the background. It gives the most depth to the image as I see the figure as very flat. I think the weakest part is the coolness of the image. More warmth would help to sculpt the figure both in light and temperature.

  4. The strongest part of your painting is the style in which your rendered the figure. This figure has a very primitive quality and had a strong presence. I think that there is a disjoint between background and figure. Either the color choice could be neutral or the pattern could be more simplistic to compliment the figure.

  5. I enjoy the background, it has a really nice movement and texture to it. I like the way you've done the body, I just want some more value ranges especially highlights. I lose the definition of the leg and it feels too skinny. He feels sturdy and solid...if that makes sense. I guess kind of like a statue but not quite there.

  6. Since this painting isn't a realistically rendered person and seems an almost abstracted pop version of a ritual figure. If you were attempting to paint the figure in a realistic way then there are a ton of things that could be changed, though I would do not want to see you paint in another way because this is something I think is wonderful. the textured background, the simple line and geometry work in the figure floating on the background. Within this style of painting, I suppose I would like to see the entire figure and perhaps a ground line.

  7. I like the style I think its unique and if I were to work on it I would suggest more tonal variation and stronger cutoff points.

  8. I really like the simplicity of the figure and how its contrasts the textured colorful background. I appreciate the "primitive" nature of the figure although I think there could be more variation in highlights and shadows - and possibly more blending between the two.

  9. I'm a huge fan of images that are superimposed onto a background, but if you were trying to avoid that, I would try and keep the pattern in the background, and darken the right side of the background and lighten the left. That might make the figure look like he's leaning against a wall. I could be wrong, but as I said before, I like this painting the way it is.

  10. You have an amazing, wonderfully unique style to your paintings. The figure, though not realistically rendered, has light and shadow and mass, and has a believable presence on the page. The background (which is super cool and interesting in its own way) is such a contrast from the figure that it actually helps the painting develop these qualities. I personally encounter immense difficulty in infusing this much style into a piece while maintaining the piece's compositional integrity, but you have done a fantastic job of just that. I really like it!

  11. this background is awesome i love the way it feels. i think you should try to use some crazier colors on the figure you wouldnt necessarily think would be there (blue, green, red, yellow for example). that being said, i think the figure is in a world of its own compared to the rest of the class' paintings

  12. I really enjoy this piece, as every time I would look at it I would see something completely different. I have no idea how you were able to make oils look like pastels, but it is really amazing. I really enjoy the color scheme you used, and can definitely tell that the most recent painting has come a long way from this one!
