Deconstruction Self Portrait- Amy Wynia (Homework #6)

Self Portrait.  Rupert Shrive.  Acrylic and varnish on brown paper.  95 x 66 x 5 cm. 2008.

Effective:

- There is definitely a narrative that illustrates that nobody is perfect but, if you work hard and try to fix what you don't like in yourself or life, you can overcome any obstacle and smooth out the wrinkles and edges.

- The wrinkles and deformity of the artist's face is the first thing one is drawn to.

Formal Composition:

 - The deconstruction is broken with the frame/surface.  The image is very asymmetrical and is given dimension with each fold and elevated wrinkle in the paper.  The imbalanced composition gives it a very imperfect narrative.  The use of value along with the crumpled surface of paper is very well done giving it depth in both compositional areas as well.
