This class involves learning the complexities of painting directly from life. Dual emphasis on exploration paint and surface, as well as the figure will be developed. This course will cover the history and appreciation of contemporary painting and will cover a wide range of painting techniques. Students will work up to developing their own personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
I like you you've created a skintone using various colors; I like that you have green orange and pink coming together to create a cohesive skin color. I enjoy looking at your painting but I am mostly fascinated by how you painted the area around his eyes. I had a difficult time with that area of the face and you did a great job! NIce choice of background colors, they make the figure stand out.
The palate you used is both vibrant and muted at the same time, which makes this piece interesting to look at. The way you handle paints is very interesting as your mark making almost vibrates. Its hard for me to look at without my glasses on. The colors you chose to use for the background elements really make the figure come forward from the rest of the scene.
The variation in color definitely shows a true skin tone. I really like the background color and shadow it works well to compel this piece among a viewer.
I really like the texture you created on the skin, I think you mentioned that you were messing around with a new medium? The colors are great, you have some great blues and yellows which complement each other well on the figure. I also really like that you have nice dark areas and highlight areas that feel balanced. I think my favorite part is the face and the way you treated it. The proportions are a bit off in some places, the propped up arm feel a bit small and the head a bit big. But overall, very well done.
I really enjoy your choice of color palate. One thing I don’t quite understand is just the background choice and whether that’s a shadow behind him or not. Your value tones are very contrasted which gives a very dimensional presence set on canvas which I really like. The pink and orange tones working together are set nicely against the green tinted couch. In this piece I feel as if he’s starting to doze off as he’s concentrating upon a tv or something.
color variation seems strange but I like the use. also patching the color in the manner you did seems off but as an overall image it comes together better. I think the background and furniture color helps the figure stand apart also I like the eyes that address viewer good work but proportions could improve to really strengthen this one
You used a very interesting style on this one. You integrated blending and texture very well to create an appealing and convincing idea of flesh. Some of the blocked areas of color feel odd to me, but I am still convinced that it is a person. The placement of the figure in the frame is very unusual the way you have cropped him and emphasized the torso over the face, but I think it really works well in this piece. I think the proportions (especially of the arms) could be addressed, but overall I think it is still a strong piece.
I think you chose a great composition for this painting. His right rib area is the most interesting part for me, because of the way you blended the opaque warm colors with the soft greens and hints of blue. It doesn't draw attention away, but instead it works well with the rest of the painting. The one thing I might change and I could be wrong, but his lower lip is a little lost. I'm not sure if it's because he's biting it or if its blending into his higher chin area. Other than that I think this painting is perfect, I love how you used so many different colors.
this one has a lot of life and I feel like you captured him on the canvas which is really difficult. You can tell it is him and there is also very intimate about the piece. I think that it is the eye contact as well as the viewpoint. I feel like these were all taken into consideration and done well.
You tried out a really interesting technique for this painting. Your progression as a painter has improved with this painting. You captured his expression quite well. The only criticism I have is that the darks you used in his body look chalky or bruised. I don't know if it's because of the shade of browns and grays you used or because you have specs of white. Other than you were successful in painting Cliff.
Knowing how much you pushed yourself and how much you broke the boundaries in which you typically work makes this piece supremely compelling. Your fight to overcome overworking is evident throughout the piece, but especially in the figure's arms, neck and face, and your colors are fresh and convincing. It is difficult to incorporate texture without making part of a painting stick out too much, but I think you have done that well. As Amy said, the dark spot behind his elbow doesn't totally stay consistent with the rest of the light and shadow in the piece, but this is a minor detail in a piece that is overall very well done!
the face and left hand are great and i really like the addition of grey to give him the likeness to a corpse. I would, however, have liked to to see some more extreme cools and warms to make him seem more three dimensional. the left arm seems to be split into two pieces rather than a full limb of flesh, but everything overall is very good
I remember you beginning this at a very challenging angle, and when I saw you lay down colors in the way you did (spots and patches of insane colors like purple and bright yellow) I was skeptical on how you would make it work. I feel like it holds together quite well, and the the ambitious angle is handled skillfully. nice job!
