This piece is part of a series by Greg Steckelman's internet pseudonym themanwhofellasleep. Using Photoshop, he edits figures out of photographs, illustrating "the idea that we all want to remove
ourselves from life, and replace ourselves with fictional,
self-created versions of ourselves." This image (loaded with narrative) involves deconstruction of identity, but it also involves deconstruction of frame, as the photoshopped figure no longer reads as part of the world that exists in the frame around him.
Banksy's self portrait exemplifies the graffiti artist's career full of deconstruction of identity and anonymity. While the figure's scrambled face is unintelligible and dehumanized, it is so characteristic of Banksy that it couldn't be anyone else. By deconstructing his identity, Banksy actually created a piece true to his own nature, and thereby truer to himself than simply a detailed rendering of his face.
Gladys from Friends is really more of a joke than anything else, but the deconstruction of frame that created her is not senseless. To Phoebe Gladys may be cute, but to everyone else the fact that she is a balding mannequin with only one hand generates fright and disgust. Without the deconstruction of frame, Gladys would be creepy, but not even close how creepy she is with the deconstruction.
