artist statement

Lenny Maskowitz paints a non-figurative self-portrait, and in his statement he writes how the sky he paints fascinates him.  He isn’t talking about the sky in real life, but more about how his mind portrays what he sees.  In this particular painting the sky is the lightest part of the painting, and that’s where my eyes take me right away. So perhaps his fascination with the sky reflects what his viewer notices first. Since the sky is smaller than the rest of the painting but brighter it’s in balance with the house, tree and horizon. I do feel like without the artist statement this painting would struggle to keep my attention.  The statement along with the painting makes it worth looking at further and lets the viewer know that what they’re looking gat is a self-portrait.
