This class involves learning the complexities of painting directly from life. Dual emphasis on exploration paint and surface, as well as the figure will be developed. This course will cover the history and appreciation of contemporary painting and will cover a wide range of painting techniques. Students will work up to developing their own personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
This piece is really interesting, as I read it as one of the Things from Dr. Seuss, but as a grown man. The angle you chose to work from seemed very difficult, but it seemed to have paid off by making the viewpoint very interesting. The color palate is wild, and really incorporates the mark making you have used. Its so funny to look at everyone's paintings, because every rendered face looks like a different person. I really enjoy this piece!
Right away i thought this was a french impressionist painting. The harmony here is very balanced and does not much detail. Between the green red and blue the figure is encapsulated in a sea of brilliant color.
Nice use of color! I like the facial expression, it gives the figure personality. I feel like the figure would benefit from more contrast in the skin tone. Most other paintings give off the narrative of a guy relaxing at home, where as your narrative is completely different to me. When I look at this, I see a guy modeling in an art studio...which is a very realistic and true. I like it, good job!
I think of your paintings so far, this one is most impressive. Definitely looks like both a Dr. Seuss inspired painting and a french painting, which... take that how you may. The anatomy on this guy is looking pretty solid, though the couch almost looks too small to home him. Initially I wasn't sure if I could accept the giant paint slash, though I think it makes a great leading point. Starting at the blue wave, my eye works my way down his hair to his face to his chest (which I will go ahead and say, it's probably the best rendered chest like yeah son look at that) to his legs. The only thing I think is needed on this piece is a little more cohesiveness in the flesh of his legs with the flesh of his torso and the couch height.
I really like the way this turned out, you have a clear style and this painting shows that. The marks, primarily on the background, are well placed and thought out creating a stylized setting. He seems like a guy relaxing on his couch watching tv. I like the more saturated colors in contrast to his more muted skin tone. Though perhaps some darker shadows would have helped here and there. The proportions seem great and the figure is grounded and has a weight to him.
I really love your choice of color. It really gives me this vibe of a crazy dream state. The proportion in my eyes seems pretty spot on. My advice if you were to go back into this piece is to perhaps just create more contrast in your values of lights and darks in his tone of skin. He seems grounded as you’ve place the somewhat diagonal line created with the couch which I enjoy. I really liked seeing yours develop each time I came by to look at it, it seemed to change so many times with colors. I really appreciate the bright hues in color you decided to use.
looking back at the photo I really like the floor color and what it does to everything above it. it feels like you don't fear experimental design and color which really sets your work apart in a good way. I think working on a larger scale would really play to your benefit in the future
This painting is fun to look at. It feels like a lot of circus colors that both frame ind invade the figure. I think your basic proportions are solid, and you've done a very good job of really seating the figure into the couch. I think there is a lack of depth in some areas, like the red pillow, but overall it is very satisfying to let my eye wander around the image because you have contained the whole composition in a way that it feels free but still engaging.
Very strong composition and the colors are definitely creating a happy easy going mood. It brings a lot to the painting narratively and like how the body is modeled. The flesh is somewhat flat and I felt like there could be more variation in color, especially because of all the surrounding color to bounce off of. The right leg begins to get these great warm tones that I believe could be brought throughout the torso.
love this painting! I like how you painted the right thigh, in life his leg was sunk into the couch making it seem like his right thigh was much skinnier compared to his left thigh. I think you did a great job showing that his leg was partly captured by the blanket and couch, making the size of both legs seem well proportioned to one another.
I loved seeing all the evolutions that this painting went through, and i love the end result. I really admire the way you are able to, as James said, create a composition that is fun and fluid, yet structured enough to keep the viewer's attention. You nailed the figure. The proportions are perfect and the figure is beautifully sculpted, especially in his arms and torso. I would have liked to see a bit more of this in his legs, but as they are the legs don't hurt the piece at all. I think you are very good at making and applying color. I still think his blue hair is my favorite part, and the pink underneath the couch is one of the most gorgeous colors i have ever seen. Something is bugging me about the blue and white lines above his head though. I like the colors and i like they way they act as frames, but they draw a bit too much of my attention away from the super good figure. Good job!
the face and the torso of the figure are awesome, but the legs seem a bit flat. The blue slash in the background was a good choice to bring more focus to the figure, and the blue hair was a good choice to make this piece more unique.
I really like how you seemed to not only create a narrative, but you seemed to change the entire mood. The figure is done very well, despite the strange change in apparent ethnicity. I actually like it. The mood is very carefree and relaxed. The figure has an entire character that the audience seems to love. Also, the blue streak above his head is a very good way of balancing the composition. I support it :)
