This class involves learning the complexities of painting directly from life. Dual emphasis on exploration paint and surface, as well as the figure will be developed. This course will cover the history and appreciation of contemporary painting and will cover a wide range of painting techniques. Students will work up to developing their own personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
First of all, your painting is impressive because it was done on such a large scale. I enjoy the simplicity of this - I can't remember if yousaid you would leave it this way or if you would work on it furthur. The highlights you created along the right leg are amazing. I get the feeling that this is a guy, just chillin out watchin some tube. Nice.
the composition and execution of a tough view point was your strongest feature in this. the color and use of light with a blank background makes for a strong feeling of presence and importance of the figure. overall really nice and reads well even without a background color, object, or definition.
I was really concerned when I saw how big your surface was, but I feel that it really brought your piece to life because of how big it is. The rendering of the body is very impressive but still holds a painterly feel. I wish you could finish this! The color palate you used works really well to convey flesh and display great shadows around the knees and feet.
Oh man, this piece. I keep finding myself looking back at the thighs and all the colour mixing within. The detail work in the shadows is especially great, and I really think what's working best for this piece is the rendering from his hands to his feet. I remember especially liking the colour washes of yellow and pink and purple around to increase the galaxy feel. I think what would have made this work stronger is positioning yourself in order to have a full uninterrupted figure.
I think that by displaying the background as an empty space and having the couch barley there, you've created a figure that feels like he would take up an entire room. I love this! I don't know if you intended to do this, but you also created a very seductive figure, by accentuating details like the outline of vanes and the position of his right hand, and what looks like tension in his right foot. I love the colors you used especially the the deep reds on both thighs and the opaque highlights(an opaque purple?), I don't have any advice, except if you want to get crazy picky I would make a small adjustment just below the left calve, where the acchilles and calve meet. There is a small indention that brings the acchilles in just a bit too much, making the left leg look like the string on a bow and arrow. again it's an incredibly small nik, and I only mentioned it, because it's hard to find improvements on something that feels like perfection.
Your use of lights and darks in the thighs and upper arm is quite amazing. I know this is such a large piece, but I’d love to see it with the couch presented in it for him to lie upon or even a brown wash of some sort. There’s definitely a presence set and he jumps out at you from the piece. The narrative gives me a sense that, it’s a laid back Saturday of relaxation, with not a care in the world but to just watch TV all day. Just your use of light wash lines to display the couch really gives him a sunken in look of resting up against something and being taken in by whatever he is looking at. Your use of detail, especially in the foot is quite remarkable from the use of blues and reds mixed in together.
I think you did a good job of filling the space and creating a huge figure that commands attention, even if a good amount is empty. I know you were starting to bring out some brighter colors around the figure, which were very nice and interesting when against the figure. It would be nice to see that finished. I think you created some great skin tones and really grounded the figure. I especially love the thighs and the way they are modeled. The one thing I can say is that the head just feel a bit small, especially when against those big legs.
I think this is a fantastic rendering of the model. You placed yourself at an angle that gave you a really interesting perspective. In this composition the focus is on the figure's body and where it lays. I find that because we are not shown a full view of the face, we can only get a glimpse into the identity of this individual and what he's about based on his pose. In this particular piece, the subject looks to be taking a nap. As far as formal elements go, you have a good sense of light and dark, as well as proportions. I can't find too much critique with your painting. I'm curious to see what you will do with the background. Good job.
Also a strong diagonal composition that bring the viewer to a awkward but brilliant angle. The lack of a background is slightly problematic, but I still do enjoy the contrast between the two. (the figure and background) Rendering of flesh tones are executed well and I enjoy the light source that seems to come across very strong and accurate on the foot.
I know that this was a difficult angle in terms of foreshortening and composition. I think that you have been very successful in filling your space and creating an interesting/dynamic composition. The one major issue I find is that the right foot leads off the image and there is very little pulling my eye back towards the body. While I enjoy the effect this has in emphasizing the leg and foot, I feel that something pulling my eye back to the left (perhaps a hint of the couch?) would benefit the image. The simplicity of the image is very nice overall. It helps to focus on the figure and on this scale the idea of space amplifies the titan-like quality of the figure, building up the idea of magnitude which is especially successful for the size you used.
Considering composition, you did a fantastic job in placement. The eye comfortably moves from left to right, and there seems to be some sort of vertical balance holding it together, much like a sideways gyroscope balancing on a string. Considering color pallette, I am truly in LOVE with what you do with color. his skin seems to burn with hot reds and browns, yet you can feel the cool in the small shadows. I feel as though he is basking in the sunlight. I am both attracted to and turned off by the negative space. It makes the piece seem unfinished (i'm one to talk!). But it almost has a nebulous feel to it. cloudy or dreamy. It makes the painting all that much more mystifying, and I appreciate how the essence fills the space.
I really like this painting (especially the right foot), but i would have liked to see a some more cool tones in the figure, but i actually love that it does not have fully rendered background because it gives the painting a sketchy feel!
