DECONSTRUCTED SELF-PORTRAIT
rubber matting, acrylic paint
Metaphysically, and within the scope of deconstruction, I
tried to incorporate the viewer as a component of my self portrait. I wanted to portray me how I see myself, with
little real-life interference from mirrors and photographs. Furthermore, I
wanted the viewer to interact with the painting, and thereby interact with me.
By putting together (or even scrambling) the puzzle pieces, the viewer must
intimately interact with me as viewed through my own eyes, and will maybe begin
to see through those eyes themselves.
I wish you had the chance to finish this before turning it in because this is an awesome concept and I would love to see it completed. Its interesting that the viewer must interact with your painting in order to see the whole image. Since I know your portrait isn't finished, it's difficult for me to critique it. So far so good!
ReplyDeleteI really love this piece and how the image and material combine together well to create an interesting narrative of a young childish feel. I as well really wish I could see the finished product of your piece. I love the use of being able to make it abstract or a full bodied person depending on how the pieces are placed. I really enjoy your use of value in it as you've brought in very warm colors with a nice represented skin tone. I hope you continue to work on this to complete it and we could possibly see the overall image in the end.
ReplyDeleteI like your concept. A person is comprised of themself and they way coexist in the universe. Your piece exonifies that in a way that the audience can directly manipulate the image you've created in a way that suites them. Really cool materials and concept.
ReplyDeleteThe was one of the pieces that I was immediately drawn to, because it was so different from everyone else. The concept is great and I like the solution you came up with to have people interact with "you" and your piece. My favorite part is probably the way you exaggerated your features, it really adds to the piece overall. I think this was brought up during class but when you do finish it do you still want the letters to be visible? If so, did you pick certain letters that could possible spell something? That would be something fun to mess around with. It would be interesting to see this idea expanded upon, perhaps with other child like materials.
ReplyDeleteI feel like this piece can play into psychology. Just as you said someone must really know you to put you together, I think it is cool that there are all these "pieces" of you that are presented to the viewer and it becomes interactive for the viewer. I believe that we are constantly putting pieces together and trying new ways to make sense of them, and I feel like your piece did this well.
ReplyDeletevery interesting approach to this assignment and good touch involving interactive presentation. I also liked that you changed the proportions and made yourself different in how you see your body. I think if you revised how you went about excluding your hands it could come across better with you intention and less of running out of time. overall one of my favorite from this assignment
ReplyDeleteI think your grasp of deconstruction is very solid in this piece, and I think the idea and the style you painted yourself in fit very well together (The really young/childlike appearance along with the foam flooring surface).
ReplyDeleteI think that the presentation was not necessarily as accessible as it might have been. It seemed like we were not supposed to touch it at first/rearrange it. (Maybe having it partially laid out with a stack nearby that says "finish me" or something?)
I think that having the artist statement gives a bit of direction to the piece, especially with the playing/reconstructing of it on the part of the viewer. Overall I think you were successful in bringing a good idea to an (almost) finished conclusion. I hope to see this/a continuation of this idea finished in the future!
I agree with james that you could have made it appear more accessible to be placed together like a puzzle instead of it be the way it was on the floor. That being said, it was a very good idea and the figure was very interesting to look at. I would have liked to see the figure done with a little more detail, but at the same time i really like it the way it is.
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful that you created something that your viewers can touch and create. Most pieces of art in museums beg the viewer not to touch in order to preserve it. Which limits the viewers experience. I think by allowing your viewer access to your work by touch and sight, you're inviting the viewer to be part of your art on another level. The concept is great and courageous. I think you said originally you wanted to make the puzzle on wood, I would definitely take this piece to that next level. Even at a greater scale. This is a wonderful self-portrait!
ReplyDeleteThis piece was really intriguing, however I wish that you were able to finish, as it seemed like a really interesting concept. I think your original idea of having it like a game puzzle in wood would have been easier to handle, and not so fragile looking. The painting was really well done, and I really like the idea of abstracting yourself. Great idea.
ReplyDeleteThe concept of deconstruction is very evident in this piece, and I loved the way you make it interactive for the viewer. I wish I knew how it looks when it is 'correctly' put together, just because I find myself trying to imagine what it looks like (this may also be the entire concept of the piece). Perhaps keep a completed photograph with the artist statement? Its an idea, but I think the piece stands well as it is.
