Jeffrey Bryant Homework #2

Techniques

Impasto – Thick paint is applied to ground to create a textured effect

Ala Prima – Wet on wet, usually done in one session.

Scumbling – A dry brush technique where blending is done with the eye blends colors more than the paint itself.

Supports

Masonite – A cheap hardwood that can be purchased at a local hardware store.

Canvas – A frame with a canvas material or linen stretched around tightly. Then gesso added for painting surface.

Plexiglas - Often used as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative for glass. This see through support can be fun to experiment with.

Grounds

Gesso – Acrylic gesso may be mixed with various acrylic media, such as matte or gloss medium.

Alkyd Gesso - Gesso made from alkyd resins and white pigment can be used for an oil painting on either canvas or rigid supports.

Acrylic mediums - are a good choice because they become water insoluble and the slight swelling and contraction is far less than rabbitskin glues movement, so it's better.

Tools

Turpentine – Solvent used to clean paint off brushes, remove paint, and thin down paint. Also odorless mineral spirits are acceptable.

Galkyd Drying Medium – Is used to improve your drying time with the oil paints. It will dry in 24 hours and is non-yellowing.

Pallet Knives – They come in different shapes and sizes, and are used to apply thick paint in an impasto nature.
