Techniques
Impasto – Thick paint is applied to
ground to create a textured effect
Ala Prima – Wet on wet, usually done in
one session.
Scumbling – A dry brush technique where blending is done
with the eye blends colors more than the paint itself.
Supports
Masonite – A cheap hardwood that can be
purchased at a local hardware store.
Canvas – A frame with a canvas material
or linen stretched around tightly. Then gesso added for painting surface.
Plexiglas - Often
used as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative for glass. This see
through support can be fun to experiment with.
Grounds
Gesso
– Acrylic gesso may be
mixed with various acrylic media, such as matte or gloss medium.
Alkyd Gesso - Gesso made from alkyd resins and white pigment can be used for
an oil painting on either canvas or rigid supports.
Acrylic
mediums - are a good choice because they become water insoluble and the slight
swelling and contraction is far less than rabbitskin glues movement, so it's
better.
Tools
Turpentine – Solvent used to clean
paint off brushes, remove paint, and thin down paint. Also odorless mineral
spirits are acceptable.
Galkyd Drying Medium – Is used to
improve your drying time with the oil paints. It will dry in 24 hours and is
non-yellowing.
Pallet Knives – They come in different
shapes and sizes, and are used to apply thick paint in an impasto nature.
