Homework: 9/11

We are talking about WHAT it is we are painting and WHY we are painting it, specifically within the realms of figurative art. Your homework assignments have been designed to explore this end as artists. We began talking about FRAME and NARRATIVE,  and what is being said in your painting and how engaging or original this message is.

Your homework for the weekend is two-fold:

1. You you are looking at the formal aspects of COLOR and paint (hue, tone, temperature) to see exactly HOW they are employed by effective figurative artists, specifically in regards to REAL 3-D weight and volume in a 2-D frame. Find THREE examples of this well-done (you are NOT limited to oil, though should stay in opaque paints) and write FOUR comments on each (2 things done WELL to create depth/ volume through color and WHY, and 2 things that could be improved and WHY)

REMEMBER the WHY is ALWAYS the most important part of any critique, otherwise it is simply your unsubstantiated opinion, and that gives no one anything to sink their teeth into.

As always, LABEL.

2. Find a good example of WELL-DONE figurative art somewhere in ABQ or Santa Fe! Tell us where this is, how long it will be there, what it is done with (if available) and a pic (if possible! Do not get int trouble for taking pictures inside of museums or galleries!!) Give us a brief feedback on why this artist is worth seeing and what it is about his/ her work that moves you. BE SPECIFIC. Remember we are looking for substance. Feel free to think outside of the box, but it must be figurative and it must be painting.
