  1. the blanket allows for the figure to become very picturesque among being motionless. He radiates that of a statue with intelligent features.

  2. The value shifts especially in the blanket are very well defined. My suggestion in making him not look like he's floating in space, is by just creating a horizontal line towards the bottom of the frame with maybe a dark green to just keep him grounded. I really like the color decisions used.

  3. The colours of this piece! I'm so glad you got to wash the corner that was previously left white during class critique. It really aids in letting this piece stand as a finish. You have the tiniest hint of a glow behind him, and because of the direction of your brush strokes, it seems to radiate from him to the corners of your page. I've been looking at it for a while and personally can't come to a conclusion of whether this harms the piece or not, but it can be useful to keep in mind for future pieces if that particular look is not desired.

  4. I really like the highlights and shadows you created in this painting, both on the figure and on the fabric. The strong shadow right next to him feels like he is right up against a wall, perhaps if shadow wasn't right next to him it wouldn't feel this way to me. I also like your choice of color for the wash it goes well with that rich blue and his body.

  5. Seeing this painting finished really helps the figure standout. Your proportions make your figure seem as though he is more of an icon of a glorified masculine figure than an actual person. That being said he looks very evenly built, very symmetrical

  6. This is such a sophisticated painting. I think your darker color palate and technique add to the sophistication of your style. Your proportions look good for the most part. The only thing I might suggest altering is the size of your figure's head. It needs to a bit larger. The angles on your chair need to be adjusted as well. It looks like your is crooked.

  7. your high level of attention to subtle changes of light and tone in the figure's flesh, along with the very intelligent dark shadow to the figure's right and bright light source to his left really make the figure come to life, despite some minor proportional irregularities. I find the continuous upside down U formed by your brushstrokes a bit distracting; I think breaking up that shape would help focus the viewer's attention on the figure a bit more.

  8. I love the shading on the over all body, and the subtlety on his face. I think that not being able to see every detail on the figures face give this painting a narrative. It's as if he's in deep thought over something incredibly concerning. One thing I might play, would be his right shoulder. Because the lighting directly behind the right shoulder is so bright, it seems like his right shoulder would also be brighter right at the edge. Or you could bring the green background up to the shoulder and take out the almost white area behind the figure. Over all I love this painting, especially the face and blue cloth.

  9. Your shading is so great! I really like the way the leg looks, you used the right amount of blue for the cooler tones and your shadows are nice and dark. The highlights, especially on the neck, are done well. The figure has nice contrast and looks great against the green background. The green color makes the figure stand out. Awesome painting!

  10. This looks much better with a finished background! I love the color choices, especially now that they compliment the green tone of the background. It really unifies the piece.
I think the hands and feet are the weak points for me. They don't convince me the way the rest of the figure does and it hurts the reality of this being a figure.

  11. your cloth is painted incredibly well and the torso area of the body is very well done. i feel the feet and hands are a little underdone as well as the face. these parts of the body, when rendered well, can bring a whole other level of believability to an image

  12. I watched your progress on this painting and really think you did an amazing job at conveying beautiful shadows and tones of the body. I feel that the head is a little smaller than it should be. But it's the cloth that really draws me in. There is something about the way you handle paint that I think is really great.
