This class involves learning the complexities of painting directly from life. Dual emphasis on exploration paint and surface, as well as the figure will be developed. This course will cover the history and appreciation of contemporary painting and will cover a wide range of painting techniques. Students will work up to developing their own personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
Use of color combination, proportion, and value shifts are very well done. The only suggestion I have is maybe using a green on the pillow instead of a yellow just because it looks almost like it blends in that area.
I believe that color choice and in the background and figure make him pop and shine. The bright yellow center in contrast with the purple edges let the figure become the focal point.
I think that this painting is very well unified and works very completely. However one thing I would adjust is the feel of the light. Because of the feel of the spotlight on the background, the multiple lights that were used cast somewhat confusing shadows (the raised leg in particular, since it seems to go completely against the "spotlight") Aside from that I really enjoy this painting. The textures are similar, but different enough that in conjunction with the more defined lighting gives it a very resolved quality.
This painting remind me of a 1920/1930 mystery scene. You have a very distinct style that gives your paintings a very strong personality. The only thing I have issues with processing is the left hand corner of the painting. Not sure what it going on there because it jumps from intense light to dark shadow and it resembles burn marks.
I like the texture you created, especially in the background. As James stated, the shadow and highlights on that raised leg really stand out because it feels out of place. Overall I think you created a cohesive and well worked image.
really nice style choice, your background is interesting and appeals to me. I would of been more careful with the greyed out areas on the flesh but really nice overall
I love the background in this painting! It reminds me of an old photo that's been warn down, but the figures are still visible. I think that the proportions are great, the only thing I would change (I could be wrong), but I would change the color of the right shoulder. Just right where the deltoid meets the top of the bicep. This is a great painting!
Your figure has great proportion. I like your style too, the textured background id really nice. I enjoy looking at all of the shapes and textures you've incorporated. Maybe the pillow would benefit from a darker possibly more neutral? color because it matches the background almost exactly. Also, the face is awesome!
I really enjoyed seeing this painting come together. Your initial drawing was perfect, and you handled the edification of the figure through flesh tones and light and shadow just as well. your smart choice of color for the background pushed the piece further towards completion, but i think there are a couple things that can help it even further along the way. The stark black you used in the figure's hands, foot, and left arm and leg are great graphically and give order to those bodies, but juxtaposed with the rest of the figure (especially the torso and chin) they tend to flatten it. I like the yellow that is behind the figure, but i think darkening it a few shades would relieve some of the tension of the conflicting light sources that James mentioned
this is a very good gouache painting and the proportions are very well done. will say i wish there were some more extreme cools and warms on his body it would make your figure pop even more. that being said the palette choice is still excellent
The colors you chose to use are very similar to James's jewel-toned palate, which I really admire. I really love the way the background is a little runny and really pulls the figure out from the rest of the canvas. The only thing I feel could be different was to maybe match the light sources to your background.
Color combination and pure form of the figure makes this piece come together like chords of harmonies.
