  1. This gives me an impression of emotion. It looks as if the figure is incased in a mind state that only he knows.

  2. The strongpoint in this piece for me is the use of complimentary colors. The colors show each other off and bring the figure to life while creating a mood. The figure is also seems placed and composition was taken into consideration. In narrative I feel he is deep in thought.

  3. The choice of color is right on point. There's definitely a set presence on the canvas that seems to represent a narration of a sense of superiority to me.

  4. James, you have a good value scale all within a similar realm of color for skin (mostly yellows, ochres and the like). Your brushwork is pretty consistent throughout the piece. Where you put the points of light is reflected with some of the darks behind him, behind his left shoulder, which helps give the image the illusion of depth

  5. color of both the figure and background look great against each other. The ability to identify the colors within the figure is strong and the composition is also good for the angle in which the figure is shown.

  7. I enjoy the complementary colors of the purple fabric with the yellow tone of his skin and the spots of blue-purple shadows. I think his expression feels very vacant, I wish there was more attention or alertness there. I think adding to his expression would help to give him more of a presence and life.

  8. This is a beautifully painted piece. The texture and application of paint is strong. You have a great eye for light and contrast which contributes to a volumetric piece. My only criticism is the same that I stated in class. Your colors are vibrant and rich but together they are overwhelming. You do not need to compromise on color but rather desaturate some of the elements in this painting. Personally I would make the background nuetral. A nuetral background would elevate the other colors you have in this painting

  9. I especially like the yellow and orange highlights, they compliment the purple blanket very nicely. Your colors are amazing, however I agree with Rabia and think that a more neutral background would have been more beneficial for the intensely colorful figure.

  10. The figure was wonderfully painted. I love seeing the different tones of browns and reds throughout the body with hints of yellow to exaggerate the lighting. You were even able to incorporate small shaded areas with blue, I think you captured the warm tones of the figure really well by limiting the use of blues and green. The only thing I would play with, would be the hair. Maybe add in some blues and greens to bring out the red tones in the hair.

  11. Everything is fantastic, the proportions, the weightedness, the light and shadow, the flesh tones, the grounding, and on and on. My favorite part is still the mysterious disappearing red pillow. I know you checked the left foot a couple times, and its length seems okay, but it still looks maybe a bit wide to me (not that it hurts the painting at all)

  12. this is a very good painting from complimentary palette choice to proportions. i will say that perhaps you could experiment with REALLY extreme darks and lights like how rembrandt does

  13. This piece is really interesting in terms of the use of color and the choice of a straight on view. I love the way you have broken up the background just with brush strokes. There's something about the jewel-toned palate that I really am captivated by. I feel that maybe his head should be a little bit longer, but the rest of the proportions are spot on.
