Paul Cezanne, Bathers oil on canvas
The image tells the story (a short story) of relaxation by the river in the afternoon and the freedom of the outdoors and nudity. The audience for this painting is NOT people interested in erotic art, but rather the eye which has a penchant for movement, expressive composition, and the post-impressionism movement of art.
The image is very engaging because Cezanne tells the audience that there are bathers, trees, water, and sky in the image but Cezanne takes all basic concepts that interest the technically correct artist (anatomy, perspective, etc.), puts them in his back pocket and creates pure energy on the canvas.
The painting is composed incredibly well because every piece of it looks intentional and it works. The contrast (in color and texture) between the figures and the landscape (even the landscape that is on the same plane as the bathers) is so stark, the viewer has no choice but to look at the bathers, which is the intentional area of focus of this work.
