  1. The characters in the master copy are very unique and rendered well within the tree. There is a nice balance of color and form in the copy. The study compliments the copy due to the palette, scene and composition. An aspect that would make your study stronger for me would be to add a character walking off in the distance.

  2. These definitely feel like they come from the same artist/series, you captured the artist's style. You also handled the tempera well in both. Seeing the study under the copy almost makes it feel like they are part of the same image, which I think was brought up in the critique. I agree with Cheyne, have a figure somewhere in the study would help complete it and connect it more with the copy.

  3. Awesome paintings, they look like they were done by Bill Watterson. I really like the trees in your master study. The colors are so appealing to me. I think I heard that you weren't happy with the shadows but I think they really add to the overall picture.

  4. I think the black outline of the trees, the bright yellows, and the white areas in the background really match Watterson's style in Calvin and Hobbs. I think the only thing you lacked were the blues and purples he uses to paint his trees. Calvin and Hobbs look great!

  5. This artist's work seems very different from your style of painting and I really love how it all turned out. I feel both works are very well done on the color palette of the vibrant reds and yellows. I really enjoy when set up the copy being above the study because it almost creates just one piece of art. But, side by side I think I'd like to see the lion or little boy in your study, even if you set them in the distance to just tie them together a bit more. I feel you executed this assignment very well.

  6. Great classic choice of artist. Yout pallete immediatly demands attention from the viewer and I think you chose your colors well. I like how they read as presented on the blog more than side by side and it almost seems diptic in that way. I think that they for sure came from the same studio and series and you made it work well. Very strong pieces when first viewed!

  7. Your master study and master copy are almost identical. These two paintings look like they came from the studio and series. Though your master study does not contain a character, it still has an illustrative appeal. The only suggestion I have is to maybe change the brown shadows to blue? The shadows look a little murky. You were very successful in creating a playful and happy image.

  8. I think I believe that these came from the same studio and series. I don't think your study is as strong as your copy though. The copy makes great use of space in the painting to convey an idea of a peaceful summer afternoon. While you don't necessarily want to convey the same idea in your study, I think that the way you split your composition (Almost in half horizontally and very balanced side to side) leaves very little opening for my brain to enjoy the image. Instead I find myself almost barred out of it. Besides that I think you did a great job on getting the style of your master.

  9. I love these, and hope that you kept them! They are very convincing that they both came from Bill Watterson, and your study of Kenyon campus looks like a continuing of your frame from the copy. I really think you did a fantastic job on capturing Calvin and Hobbes.
