FINAL PROJECT, Part 1
Digital Painting

FINAL PROJECT, Part 2
Digital Painting

Final Project Artist Statement

I am an artist that enjoys a multitude of media. I am easily a jack of all trades (master of none) when it comes to pursuing my personal art career. With that in mind, this semester I aimed to push myself using new ideas, methods, or tools that I wouldn’t have thought to use before. My final project went through two different phases. Initially, it was going to become a piece that flirted with the idea of a self destructing canvas. I wanted to paint our three figures on a bowl of fruit, which would decompose as I paint and become a horrific and gruesome figure painting. I hoped, by using this specific canvas, to create a piece that would challenge the idea of traditionally beautiful figure paintings and studies of bowls of fruit.

That didn’t happen. Instead, I created two digital pieces with Photoshop CS6 and a wacom bamboo tablet. Digital painting is not a medium I am new to, but I have always struggled with using it for life drawing. My final project, in its final form, turned into simple medium studies. I became so wrapped up in little details that I could zoom in on—details that would be lost had I made a small traditional painting. I was able to learn more about how to digitally paint from life, which is very different from traditional painting from life.

  1. I love these paintings! I can't believe how easily you used a new medium to create figures that you claim to struggle with. I think that the faces are especially wonderful, they look exactly like the models. I didn't even realize that one of the models was wearing earnings! The only thing that sticks out is the dark outlining on Huck's neck. It seems like the shadows on all of your figures are so nicely blended except on his neck. I can't remember if you said you ran out of time on his neck. I also think that the proportions and skin tone are well done. Awesome paintings

  2. I am so impressed with your project! It's so similar to oil painting and you've done an excellent job of realistically rendering the figures. One of your greatest strengths is capturing the light in a scene. I especially see this in your painting of Anastasia. The light on Anastasia's face is so beautiful! Overall great job!

  3. These paintings are by far some of my favorites for this final project. You did such a great job with the skin tones and variations that it really gives it a realistic feel. As someone who is still pretty new to digital paintings, I really liked the way you approached this and the results. It still gives the sense of a traditional painting with the sort of splotchiness of the skin like brush strokes and color blocking ( I mean this in a good way). It would be great to see these with a more finished background but they are still very nice.

  4. I am amazed by your mastery of this medium. You so effortlessly have created figures with weight and grounding in space, with believable lighting and skin tones, things that you sometimes had difficulty with using traditional paint. I haven't seen your digital figure paintings before this one (besides the self-portrait last semester) but it does seem like many of the breakthroughs you made on the oil painting of Cliff carried over to this medium. This, added to the fact that you seem more comfortable working digitally, resulted in two studies that are strong enough to work as individual pieces as they are.

  5. The first image is my favorite. I feel like you really captured a lot of warmth while the second one feels very cool to me. I also feel like your work on the figure is a lot stronger and it holds together very well with the interplay of light and shadows. I do wish that the finish of the background had made it under the figure, it feels a little cut off. But otherwise two great pieces for a relatively new medium!

  6. I was a little apprehensive at first when I saw you working digitally, perhaps because digital painting is something that is intangible. When I saw your final results I was really impressed, as many of the works I've seen that are digital are not as lifelike as the ones that you have created. The first image of Anastasia is my favorite, as it looks the most painterly. The image of Jenny looks just like her as well. However the outlining of Puck is very distracting compared to the rest of the painting. I think these pieces work strongly as separate pieces, and as a series. Good job!

  7. I envy youe digital skill and I would love to try this sometime, I am very impressed by the blending of colors and you made it look easy and fun. I like how you expiriment with.in so many mediums and I can appreciate that and understand how that can become overwhelming sometimes. I like how you approached these studies and it seems you feel comfortable in this area

  8. I know you had said you had run out of time on these, but it is kind of hard to look past some of that to fairly critique them. Your strongest point, in considering your style, is Jenny is the most successful. Her proportions are correct, but in comparison Huck's eyeline doesn't match up with his nostril or mouth and his face is slightly too long. Your work is always very impressive when finished, I am just slightly disappointed with what we ended up seeing by it not being finished.
