Artist Statement

Have you ever thought about how many people think about you? It’s so bizarre. Imagine someone, out of the blue, thinking of your face. Something happens; they remember you. Your favorite song, how you dress, the way you talk, the look in your eyes when you are happy. They remember that about you, even if you haven’t seen each other in years. Everything in life is a reminder of a person, a place, a moment. You may think you’ve forgotten, but you haven’t.

Besides the thought and theme behind my piece, the goal was to just do a regular figure study. As an artist I’ve seen so much growth in my work with each stroke and taking into account each critique from others. But, the thought of other’s work is always on my mind, and striving to do better and challenge myself with my work. I’ve come to the conclusion that all the frustration I’ve built up with my pieces, I can honestly say there’s a few in which I’m proud of, and it’s all the more worth it. This painting is an example of this. I didn’t do anything really risky and extremely new but, I’m one who is very interested in the mind and how others think and act, and that’s when I came across the above quote. If you do think about it, it is pretty insane in how someone is always thinking of you and you’re thinking of someone else. Memories are moments with people are ones to be cherished. In all reality, it’s the thoughts of others and the things around them that makes our work what it is.

  1. I think your third one with the girl from the pair shows your growth in technical accuracy. you have a style that I can see developing a lot over time. I like the idea this s centered around and how you presented it. I think time will play to your advantage and youll be able to push your concepts more later in life

  2. The concept behind your painting is so interesting to me! Something else I find interesting is that you added clothes to your people. Although we only see the shoulders, they are covered, I like that. The two extra clouds are a nice touch. I agree with Zach in that this concept can be furthur investigated (for lack of a better word) haha.

  3. Great concept behind your work. I have seen a lot of technical improvement from the first study, I think you still have room for growth there. When I look at the image(s) I'm not really convinced that these people (except for the bottom left) are thinking about each other. They just seem to be looking into space. Changing the angle you worked from would have helped to change that I think.

  4. I really do enjoy the concept of your work, I also think a lot about our connections as humans, how we think about each other, and how the way we may dress affects that. I wish you would have commented on the clothing though, and perhaps defended the reasoning behind adding it. The clothing feels a lot like adding a fig leaf to a painting -perhaps it has something to do with discomfort, or decency. Or maybe you didn't mean to make that connection at all. What I am saying is that when you show your work, the audience will put so many ideas on your work -subconscious concepts that you may not want to associate with the work. An artist is almost obliged to think about everything (and explain it) -so they may confronted with nothing.

  5. I think the three dimensional part of this piece was a bit risky but you pulled it off within the form of color and composition. The concept is made much more clear after reading your statement than just viewing the piece. I was a bit confused on what you were trying to really convey but i could read the overall picture.

  6. I agree with everyone above, your concept was a great idea. I definitely see an improvement from your first study. Keep painting, if figures are something you are interested in doing, then you're headed in the right direction. One thing I would consider changing, would be to have the guy in a thought bubble that is coming from the lower figures head, and then put the top figure in a thought bubble that is coming from the guys head. Like a chain one person thinks of someone probably the same as the other person thinks of someone else.

  7. I was actually surprised when I saw this, I was not expecting your painting to turn out this way but it was a fun surprise. I know this is weird but to me it gave me the sense of a family portrait for some reason, I guess that had to do with the display. I like your concept but without having read your statement I would not have come to the conclusion you were making. I think maybe your idea could have worked a bit better if there were more thought bubbles of the figures. You mention how anything can make us think of someone, but you only decided to focus on their faces. Maybe just expanding on this idea more would help it to feel more complete.

  8. I loved getting to see the whole process of your project. I know that you worked really hard in execution and concept of this piece. I love how it turned out! This is one of your best pieces in the class! Your proportions have improved so much and I agree with Zach that your work will continue to prosper. I think it was a good choice to repaint Huck or Puck (?) because your second painting of him came out really nicely with the addition of values. Good job Amy!

  9. You made a very brave choice deciding to do this painting. I have always shied away from expressing ideas through artistic narrative, especially ideas as metaphysical as yours, and I am impressed by the thought you put into your concept. The degree of difficulty was greatly increased by the fact that the models were set in place, and you couldn't move them into different positions for your composition. That said, and after reading your artist statement, I think that portraits in clouds was an effective way of making your idea come across. i might have been confused had i not been able to read your artist statement. You have progressed so much during the course of this class, and I am excited to see how well your ideas will be carried out as your technical execution improves

  10. Your concept is really interesting and can see it in the narrative. I am surprised by your choice to put clothes on them, but it really makes for a more calming piece with no sexual motives. I can really see your improvement with figure studies and proportioning. Especially in the image of jenny, it looks just like her! I am excited to see what you paint next, showing that your improvement will never stop! Keep it up.

  11. Amy, your fundamentals in art have had the largest increase of any artist I have seen in this class over the semester. You have started to consider and plan more aspects of your art before you start to lay down any material. Finally seeing you break the frame of a painting is a big improvement. More so, your figures look better now than they have throughout the semester, though don't stop trying to get better. I still feel as though your art has a very distinct 'outsider' style so I hope you don't lose that while you improve upon what you already know.

  12. I really enjoyed seeing you take such leaps in this vlass from your first project to this one you can tell you have become more in touch with your art making. I like how joe pointed out you breaking the frame and I'm glad you did so. Your figures are so muchn more believeable in space and I feel you accomplished what you wanted to with this piece. I liked the expiriment of materials and paint to convey this idea of how someone could be thinking about you at any time and what that means.
